The Sacramento Kings NBA team has announced that they are mining Ethereum (ETH). The team started mining with Nvidia mining rigs three weeks ago. The basketball team’s owner, Vivek Ranadive is also a founder of Tibco and a software entrepreneur.
Back in 2014, the Kings were the first NBA team to accept Bitcoin as a payment method at their store and for season tickets.
Vivek Ranadive explained that the team was a big fan of Ethereum. He said that it was obvious to them to “start mining cryptocurrency”. The mining profits will support a local charity group supporting black communities.
A home of the Sacramento Kings, the Golden 1 Center, has solar panels on its roof and can generate up to 1.2 megawatts of energy. Even though the mining project isn’t directly related to basketball, it will help introduce sports fans to the new technology.
“Through MiningForGood, not only will we raise funds to help with workforce development and training, we aim to inspire the next generation of tinkerers and thinkers to create change in their own community and around the globe.” – Ranadive explained.
The team was already recognised as one of the World’s Most Innovative Sports Companies, by the Fast Company magazine.
