A Bitcoin mining operation will soon open in an abandoned aluminium smelting plant in Upstate New York town of Massena. The cloud mining service Coinmint will invest “up to $700 mln” in the project.
The 1300 acress Alcoa aluminium plant will be adapted by the end of 2019. It will become one of World’s largest Bitcoin mining centres, once completed.
The original aluminium smelting plant seized to operate four years ago. Now as many as 150 new jobs will be created over the next 18 months.
Coinmint was welcomed in Massena by Steve O’Shaughnessy, Massena Town supervisor:
“The thought of 150 jobs and revitalization of the Alcoa East Facility is exciting and what we have been working for. We are ready to provide any assistance we can to move this project to its full potential.”
With an easy access to cheaper hydroelectric and wind energy, the location seems like a great choice for mining. Bitcoin mining equipment generates a significant amount of heat, so the climate is also important. And since Massena is located just south of the Canadian border – this will not be an issue.
The work is already underway and the 435 Megawatt center is expected to begin operating next year.
