Bitcoin Core’s new major version, 0.16.1, has been officially released. It includes new features and performance improvements. The update was announced on June 15th.
The new release adds “new features, various bugfixes and performance improvements, as well as updated translations.”
The upgrade completely removes the “- blockmaxsize” option for miners.
“The `-blockmaxsize` option for miners to limit their blocks’ sizes was deprecated in version 0.15.1, and has now been removed. Miners should use the `-blockmaxweight` option if they want to limit the weight of their blocks’ weights.”
The update affects the wallets as well. Those created in version 0.16 or later are now “not compatible with versions prior to 0.16 and will not work if you try to use newly created wallets in older versions,”
The previous version was released in February of this year. It introduced a full support for the Segregated Witness (SegWit) scaling technology. SegWit aimed at reducing the processing times and transaction fees.
The update paved the way for further updates, like the Lightning Network, which may reduce the fees and network confirmation times even further.
